VIVAN & KETAN BHATTI
Biography
The Bhatti Brothers, Vivan and Ketan Bhatti, are an award-winning composer duo working at the intersection of contemporary music, electronic sound design, and cinematic storytelling. Their music is defined by a strong narrative sensibility and a fluid integration of orchestral writing, experimental textures, and rhythm-driven electronic production.
As film and screen composers, the Bhatti Brothers approach music as a dramaturgical force - closely aligned with character, pacing, and visual rhythm. Their work spans feature film, music theater, opera, and large-scale interdisciplinary productions, consistently shaped by a cinematic understanding of form and emotional timing.
They composed the original score for the feature film Fly, directed by Katja von Garnier. In addition, they have created music for stage adaptations of Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakeningand Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, featuring actor Tom Schilling, projects noted for their psychologically precise, film-like musical language.
Beyond screen work, their music is a core element of productions at major German-speaking theaters and opera houses, including Deutsches Theater Berlin, Schauspiel Köln, Staatstheater Dresden, Staatsoper Hannover, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Their long-standing collaboration with the internationally touring Berlin dance company Flying Steps highlights their affinity for visually driven, rhythmically powerful formats that translate seamlessly into cinematic contexts.
The Bhatti Brothers are also known for large-scale music theater and operatic works developed with leading contemporary writers such as Feridun Zaimoglu and Roland Schimmelpfennig. Their opera Berlin Alexanderplatz - the first musical adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s novel - received multiple nominations in Opernwelt’s critics’ poll, including Best World Premiere. Their most recent opera, Der Rote Wal – Ein deutsches Herbstmärchen, premiered in 2025 at the Staatsoper Stuttgart with a libretto by Maeckes.
Vivan Bhatti studied classical guitar in Munich and Düsseldorf, while Ketan Bhatti studied jazz drums and composition at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 2013, Ketan co-founded the Trickster Orchestra with vocalist Cymin Samawatie, an internationally acclaimed ensemble for transcultural contemporary music. Ketan Bhatti has received numerous awards, including the GEMA Music Authors’ Prize and the Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge Prize.
With their deep understanding of narrative structure, sound design, and emotional pacing, the Bhatti Brothers bring a distinctive cinematic voice to film, stage, and hybrid audiovisual formats.
